About Us

Meditation on the Mountains CircleHi, and welcome to Happy Body Kitchen, a plant-inspired food blog! I am Sommer, a dog obsessed, sarcasm loving, nutritionist meets food blogger. I love traveling and exploring new places, but when I am home in Boulder, CO my passion is updating my blog in order to share new nutrition information and simple plant-based recipes that are allergy friendly. I am blessed with a supportive family; my wonderful boyfriend, Daniel; and my biggest food fan, Cali, my adorable shih-tzu.

I graduated in fall 2010 with a BBA in Business Management. My parents owned their own business for as long as I can remember, and I always new I wanted to as well. I loved the idea of having a craft or trade over an office job. So, after some indecision on what to major in; spending a year as a math major, and another under accounting, I realized the business degree was more my style. The apple didn't fall too far from the tree.

The whole idea of following someone else's rules never really sat well with me, and it was definitely not in line with what I imagine 'living life to the fullest' to mean. So, naturally, I took a job immediately after I graduated at an online advertising agency [hopefully, you caught my sarcasm]. As one would expect, I sat behind a desk, staring into the black hole of a computer screen for 3 years. I had denied for too long that this just wasn't the type of work I was meant for, and new it was time to move on. I quit in 2014, and choked down that I was throwing away a pretty nice paycheck in the process. "You can't live for money or money will own you", I had to keep telling myself that!

Cali Free Hugs RoundSo, I decided it was a perfect time to travel. When you begin to explore the world, you not only learn a lot about different cultures and customs, but you also learn a lot about yourself. Some good, some bad, but all things necessary. My realization was that as individuals we will always keep changing. We can either deny this and fight it... or we can embrace it, but no matter what it will continue to happen. For me I realized that I wanted to live a life of happiness, of continual improvement, and of passion! I din't want to sit behind a desk, when there was so much more to the world. While some may find office work rewarding (no judgment here), I knew it wasn't the life for me. My passions lied within nutrition and fitness, and I decided this is the craft I want to have. It can not only change my world for the better, but hopefully my knowledge could help others to change for the better too.

So, in 2015 I became a Certified Holistic Nutrition Consultant. It was the best decision I have ever made, and even though I was low on funds and living off savings at the time, I was forever grateful to myself for taking the risk. My eyes were opened up to a whole new world. I realized how powerful the information was that I learned and continue to learn. I also realized how misleading and false the nutrition information that we are being bombarded with every day through advertisements, tv ads, radio, etc. I truly believe a lot of people want to make healthier changes in their lives, and attempt to on a regular basis, but IDEA Conference Cunfortunately do so in the wrong ways.

You already know that the more veggies you eat, the healthier you will be; this concept is not new. Food is the source of our nutrients; it is where we get everything we need for our cells to thrive and keep on living. Yet, today we choose fast food over home cooked meals, we give our kids candy over a nutrient-rich snack, and our schools classify pizza as a vegetable! So, more than ever our bodies are being deprived of nutrition, and this is quickly turning into more diseases and illnesses.

That's why Happy Body Kitchen was created, to help others learn the truth about food and common practices along with providing recipes that help you start to create a healthier, more plant-based lifestyle. One step at a time.
